Fringe #42 - Monday, August 21 - Two more shows, visiting and WORD OF MOUTH!

I only took in two shows today, I had tentative plans for a third but hadn't bought the ticket and when I got around to it the show (Cabaret of Murder) was Sold Out so I was out of luck there. Let that be a lesson to you all - do not count on tickets being available at the last minute, especially for the shows you want to see. It pays to buy in advance to avoid disappointment. So even though I didn't get to see that show, I did run into friends on the Fringe Site and had a couple of wonderful visits. Fringe is mostly theatre, but not only theatre and I must admit it is the best place for seeing friends and having a quick catch up! I had a good visit with my friend Kristin whose show Lady Porn is on at the Fringe this year (I hear it's hilarious and am going to see it tomorrow!) and my friend Lucas whose show The Clockmaker is also on this year (It has twice made my WORD OF MOUTH list, but I can't fit it in until the last slot of the Fringe on Sunday night!). 


What I did get to see were two very funny shows, both of which I recommend you check out. First I saw In Waking Life at the Yardbird. It was very, very funny. I picked it because it was the Pick of the Toronto Fringe and it's not hard to see why. It's family friendly, but clever and combines improv with script featuring the Synsk Sisters: two charming psychics who have come here to fix all of your problems. They use many devices to do this: from astrology, to the Magic 8 Ball, to paper Fortune Tellers, and a Crystal Ball. They also have their own problems that emerge while delving into the problems and questions of the audience. Both actors are quick on their feet and always in character and it was delightful! Check it out! 


Next up was Puck Bunnies from Guys in Disguise. So funny, and very good. I always love how they creatively layer in social issues without lecturing and some of it hit very close to home. But don't worry, it's not preachy. The trio of Tammy, Tina and Tanya show the many sides of the hockey player girlfriend - the Puck Bunnies who are there to support the players no matter what. These are girls who might wear a pussy hat but feel if you get the right boyfriend (on the team) then you don't have to really do feminism. As I said, it's more than just the laughs and the double entendres, it's clever, tightly delivered and the costumes and make-up are so on-point! A definite DON'T MISS for me and clearly for many others. This is not a show you can wait to get tickets to. It was packed today and I expect will be for all their shows!

Fringe 2024 - Friday, August 16th - A Terrific Afternoon of Shows!

I caught three shows yesterday afternoon and had a wonderful time! Bright Lights - So funny and so well done! This script is hilarious but it only works because the acting and directing is so excellent! I mean, you have to figure those that attend a group for Alien Abduction "experiencers" are going to provide opportunity for huour but I was laughing so much! Great to see some of our finest local actors in this piece and some in roles you wouldn't expect to hilarious effect! See it! ROB AND CHRIS (BOBBY+TINA)-A NEW MUSICAL - Another excellent show. This one a new musical based on Collin Doyle's Let the Light of Day Through ( perhaps the best new script I have seen ever and I think of it often... ). The musical is the same but different, as it is a musical. But it is excellent. Sometimes it's hard to be nice... Lessons Learned with Donna Orbits the Moon and Spinsters in #yegtheatre this week...

I caught two thought-provoking (and funny) shows this weekend.  Patricia Darbasie in Donna Orbits the Moon , Brianne Jang BB Collective Photography The first, Donna Orbits the Moon presented by Northern Light Theatre, was a one-woman show with the impressive Patricia Darbasie as Donna, a woman finding herself reacting with intense rage to inconveniences in her life. We are not exactly sure at the beginning why these moments are provoking such anger and violence, but there's something in the way that Donna tells the story that we are totally on her side. Indeed when I read a description online before seeing the show, I immediately connected. Too often we are expected to smile and be accommodating and the desire to say " No! " is often very strong with me. I see you, Donna! But there's something more to Donna's rage. Fringe 2024 - Saturday, August 24th - Young Wives and The Bells!

I saw two shows on Saturday. I'm pacing myself this Fringe so I might not hit my usual 30+ total! But despite the slightly overcast weather, it was a nice day - not too hot and my feet could handle the walk to Sugar Swing and back to the main grounds! What a Young Wife Ought to Know - This was a very well done production of Hannah Moscovitch's script. I had not seen the show when it was done in the city in 2018 but was glad to catch it here at the Fringe. It deals with the challenges and trials of a young (a very young) wife in 1920s Ottawa dealing with managing her fertility despite a lack of support both socially and medically. This is pre-birth control pill times; this is back alley abortion and throw yourself down the stairs to end a pregnancy time; this is the time when women frequently dies in childbirth. This is the time when you are looked at with disgust and judged when you ask for help for how to prevent a pregnancy. Anyhow, the show was very well done. The cast of
