Who will look after them in their Old Age I wonder?

My cousin Brian posted this on his Blog. Fine if you truly believe this (about kids and the environment) but to say it is selfish to have children is a little short sighted.

Uh....I think people make up the planet as much as anything else, don't they? From a Darwinian point of view I'm not sure I'm too upset that these individuals chose not to reproduce.

On a slightly different note, we did have an interesting discussion over dim sum the other day when my BIL asked since children are so important (i.e. in terms of national productivity, resources etc, aging population and looking after us in our Old Age) why doesn't the government pay financial restitution to people to have them? One point made was that with many countries dealing with population problems (food shortages, etc) from a humanitarian/environmental point of view perhaps the money would be better spent improving immigration and assimilation programs.
